Taking over as just the fourth head coach since the inception of the Bullets’ women’s lacrosse program in 1971, there was no fall off in the success of the program in Cunningham’s first year at the helm in 2023.

She guided Gettysburg to the Division III national championship game for the fifth time in program history and had the team ranked in the top 10 of the IWLCA coaches’ poll each week during the season.

The Bullets posted a perfect 9-0 Centennial Conference (CC) record and went 19-5 overall, including winning 17 of the last 19 games. Her offense set a new program standard, pouring in a record 379 goals and 557 points to go with a record-setting 358 draw controls.

She coached three Gettysburg players to the top awards in the conference with Jordan Basso (attacker), Lily Macatee (defensive) and Julia Daly (rookie) taking home hardware at season’s end. Four players also garnered All-America honors.

Prior to taking over as head coach, Cunningham spent four years as an assistant coach on the staff of 30-yard head coach Carole Cantele ‘82.

In four seasons as an assistant, Cunningham has helped Gettysburg to a 47-8 record while coaching 15 All-America selections, 17 all-region selections, and 21 all-conference performers. In the two full seasons that she was on the sidelines as an assistant, the Bullets spent all but seven weeks as a top-five team in the country, including eight weeks as the No. 1 team in 2019. That squad finished 19-2 overall, claimed its 12th CC title, and advanced to the NCAA regional championship.

In 2022, the Bullets posted a 19-4 mark and claimed the program’s 13th CC title before advancing to the national semifinals for the eighth time in 17 seasons.

In addition to leading the recruiting efforts, Cunningham led the strength and conditioning program for the Gettysburg women’s lacrosse program. She also had a key role in designing the Bullets’ offensive strategy while leading the draw control unit and training the goalies.

She has also served as leader in both the Gettysburg Athletics Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and Student-Athlete Well-Being Program. She has also served as a coach within 3D Lacrosse, leading weekly trainings and speaking on panels to student-athletes on the collegiate recruiting process.

PRIOR TO GETTYSBURG

Cunningham joined the Bullets staff from East Stroudsburg University, where she served as the graduate assistant women’s lacrosse coach for the 2018 season. During her time there, she helped the squad to its first regional championship and Division II NCAA national semifinal appearance after posting a 15-4 mark. Six players were voted all-region under her guidance.

As a student-athlete, Cunningham was a four-year member of the Division II Seton Hill University women’s lacrosse team, where she earned second team all-conference as a senior. She tallied a career total of 37 goals and 86 assists.

Cunningham graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communications and Advocacy Media Communications from Seton Hill in 2017 and earned her master’s in Management and Leadership; Organizational Behavior in the summer of 2018 from East Stroudsburg.

Head coach at Wheaton (Mass.) from 2006-07

Earned NCAA at-large bids in each of first two seasons

AT GETTYSBURG

Toner returns to the Gettysburg sidelines for his third season as head men's lacrosse coach in 2024.

In his debut campaign on the sidelines, Toner guided the Bullets to a 14-8 overall record and 6-2 mark in conference play, advancing to the Centennial Conference (CC) championship game before falling to Dickinson 10-9 in overtime. Gettysburg, however, would exact revenge on the Red Devils two weeks later and win a NCAA Division III third-round game in Carlisle 17-7 and advance to the national quarterfinals.

For a follow-up campaign, Toner led his squad to a hot start that included wins in nine of the first 10 games and four wins over nationally-ranked foes. Gettysburg handed eventual national champions Salisbury its only blemish on the year with a 12-10 win over the top-ranked Sea Gulls on Feb. 25 at Shirk Field. The Bullets went on to another CC semifinal appearance and advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament. A record 11 players garnered all-conference accolades, including four first-team honorees.

PRIOR TO GETTYSBURG

Just the fourth head coach of Gettysburg since 1969, the Springfield College graduate and former head coach at Wheaton College returned to his Division III roots after spending the previous 11 years at Penn State, including the final eight as associate head coach. Toner served as the recruiting coordinator and guided the team’s defensive effort, both of which contributed to unprecedented success for the Nittany Lions. In 2019, Penn State set a school record for wins (16), captured the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles for the first time, posted its first-ever victory over the University of Maryland, and advanced to the NCAA semifinals. For his efforts, Toner was named Assistant Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA).

Toner arrived at Penn State alongside head coach Jeff Tambroni in 2011 and the duo quickly established the Nittany Lions as a major player in Division I lacrosse. Penn State won at least a dozen games three times and finished either first or second in the conference standings on four occasions. Toner helped Penn State reach the NCAA playoffs in 2013, 2017, and 2019. In his 11 years in Happy Valley, the Nittany Lions posted a record of 93-61.

Prior to Penn State, Toner spent three seasons as the associate head coach at Bryant University, where he served as the team’s defensive coach and recruiting coordinator. Bryant reached the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2008 and Toner helped guide the Bulldogs through their transition to Division I competition. Bryant compiled a 22-10 record in its first two years competing at the nation’s top division.

Toner’s selection as Gettysburg’s head coach marked his return to the Division III ranks after 14 years. His last Division III coaching job came as the head coach at Wheaton College for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. In his first year he led Wheaton to a 10-6 record and an appearance in the ECAC Division II Championship game.

PLAYING DAYS

As a player at Springfield, Toner contributed to three NCAA playoff appearances and served as team captain twice. He garnered All-New England accolades and was tabbed an All-American by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

After graduating with a degree in sports management, Toner served as a graduate assistant on the Springfield lacrosse staff while earning his master’s in physical education.
