Monica Scott

Monica Scott (career record: 57-35, through the 2023 season) joined the Centre Athletics staff as women's lacrosse coach in the summer of 2017.

The 2021 season put Scott and the Colonels back on track to success, holding a 9-4 record and qualifying as the second seed in the Southern Athletic Association Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. Centre was able to route the third seed, Oglethorpe, in the semifinal 23-5 before falling to top seed Rhodes in the championship game.

Scott's women's lacrosse team hoisted several postseason accolades after their 2021 campaign concluded, including honors from both the IWLCA and the SAA. A pair of seniors, Mary Katherine Hardy and Clare Heaney, were selected the the IWLCA All-West Region First, while freshman Lily Gahm was one of three rookies honored on the Second Team. Heaney and Gahm would also collect a couple major SAA postseason awards for the Colonels, the former being named the SAA Defensive Player of the Year and the latter being nominated as the conference's Newcomer of the Year honoree. Centre ended up with four student-athletes among the All-SAA First Team, three more on the Second Team and an extra two on the Honorable Mentions list.

The Colonels success didn't stop on the field in the 2021 season, as four members of Scott's squad were nominated and honored as individuals on the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll. Katy Haering (Behavioral Neuroscience major), Hardy(Economics and Finance), Heaney (Behavioral Neuroscience) and McKenna Hulette (International Studies) each brought home the award. The entire Centre women's lacrosse team was also selected on the IWLCA Academic Honor Squad, posting a 3.2 or higher team GPA for the academic year.

During the shortened 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Scott's squad ended with a 3-5 record, including two dominant SAA victories against Berry (17-1) and Hendrix (21-6).

In 2019, Scott's Colonels finished 14-5 overall while reaching the SAA Championship game for the second season in a row. Hannah and Mary Katherine Hardy were IWLCA All-Region players for Coach Scott, and as a team Centre placed seven on the All-SAA teams.

The Colonels put together a stellar season in Scott's inaugural campaign (2018), going 15-3 overall. The Colonels won a program-best 13 games in a row during one stretch, all by 10 or more goals. Along with her own SAA Coach of the Year honor, Scott helped mentor 2018 SAA Defensive Player of the Year Natalie Marek. Marek joined Hannah Bellamah, Colleen Jackson and Haden Gibbons on the IWLCA All-Region squad, as well.

Scott arrived at Centre after having coached the previous three seasons at Division II Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga. Scott guided Emanuel to a 10-5 record – the best mark in school history – in 2017, the program's third full season of women's lacrosse.

Before working at Emmanuel, Scott served as a student-athlete mentor at the University of Georgia, where she earned her Master's degree in Sport Management and Policy in December of 2014.

Originally from Roanoke, Va., Scott is a 2013 graduate of the University of Kentucky, where she was a player and coach on the school's women's lacrosse club team.

Grant Zimmerman

Grant Zimmerman became the Centre head men’s lacrosse coach in the summer of 2018. He has posted a career record of 46-20 in five seasons in Danville.

In the 2023 season, Zimmerman guided the Colonels to a 13-4 record that included both titles of Southern Athletic Association (SAA) co-regular season champions and tournament champions. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Centre took down Pfeiffer, a team they has suffered a close 14-13 loss earlier in the season on the brand new Andy Frye Stadium. The Gold & White then advanced to the second round where they fell to the No. 9 ranked Washington & Lee. Over the successful 2023 campaign, Zimmerman guided two players to majors awards. Will Hubbs' claimed his third SAA Offfensive Player of the Year honor while leading scorer, Ryan Black, clinched the SAA Newcomer of the Year award

In 2021, Zimmerman led the Colonels to a 12-2 record that included Southern Athletic Association regular season and tournament championships, and the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. Centre defeated then-No. 14 Denison, 12-11, at Farris Stadium in the opening round of the national tournament, sending the Colonels to the "Sweet 16" for the first time ever.

He was named SAA Coach of the Year for the second time in his three seasons in 2021, guiding SAA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, Will Hubbs and Wills McCutcheon. Thirteen Colonels earned All-SAA awards for the 2021 campaign, while six individuals were named to IMLCA All-Region squads. McCutcheon and Jack Shannon garnered USILA All-America honors, as well.

Zimmerman made an impact right away for the Colonels during his inaugural season in 2019, guiding the team to a 10-5 overall record and the two seed in the SAA Tournament, earning SAA Coach of the Year honors.

A former goalie, he mentored SAA Defensive Player of the Year and IMLCA All-Region selection, Connor Jongewaard, who ranked third in NCAA Division III in save percentage (.617). All told, Centre placed seven on the All-SAA teams during Zimmerman's first season.

Prior to arriving at Centre, Zimmerman spent three seasons as the assistant coach at Denison. During his three seasons with Denison, Zimmerman helped the Big Red reach three NCAA Tournaments, including a national semifinal appearance in 2017. The Big Red won the NCAC Tournament each of his three seasons and was a mainstay in the top 25.

A defensive coordinator and goalie coach, Zimmerman helped Denison finish with a top-eight goals-against average twice. In 2016, the Big Red had a Division III-best 6.29 adjusted goals-against average.

Zimmerman was a four-year starter between the pipes for the University of North Carolina between 2006-09. As a junior, he was named a USILA All-American and was included on the Tewaarton Trophy watch list (awarded annually to the top player in college lacrosse).

In 2009, Zimmerman was the team captain and a Lowes Senior Class Award finalist. He was named to the ACC Lacrosse All-Academic team for the second time and was the winner of the Davy Award for senior leadership. Prior to graduation, Zimmerman was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the men's lacrosse program.

After earning his Bachelor of Arts at UNC, Zimmerman played internationally as a member of the Netherlands men's national team. He played in two European Lacrosse Championships (2008, 2012) and was the team captain of the Netherlands at the World Lacrosse Championships in 2010.

His early coaching experience includes work at The Gilman School in Baltimore, three seasons at Susquehannock High School in Glen Rock, Pa., and a season at John Carroll, where he was an assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the Blue Streaks.

Zimmerman and his wife Mattie, an Athletic Trainer for the Colonels, live in Danville. They have one daughter, Caroline.

Soccer in College gave me a good point of reference for perspective coaches, somewhere I could direct them to see all of my data, in a well-organized, efficient manner. It was a good tool for my recruiting efforts.
