Ciara Burud

Hired over the summer of 2023, Ciara Burud is beginning her first year as Head Women's Lacrosse Coach at Barton College.


Burud comes to the Wilson, N.C., school after spending the past two seasons (2022-23) as an Assistant Coach at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va. Burud helped coach two players ot All-ODAC honors during her tenure with Bridgewater.


In additions, Burud served an an assistant for Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y., and Red Hook High School in Red Hook, N.Y., and served as a club mentor for the Dutchess Monarchs Lacrosse Program (LaGrange, N.Y.).


Burud was a 2020 graduate of Findlay (Ohio) were she was a five-year letter winner for the Oilers' women's lacrosse team. Burud was a three-time All-Great Midwest Atlantic Conference First-Team honoree and a All-Midwest Region selection in 2019. Burud totaled 199 goals, 66 assists, 265 points, 184 ground balls, 195 draw controls and 109 caused turnovers during her collegiate career.


In the classroom, Burud was a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree, a two-time Findlay Coca-Cola Scholar-Athlete Award honoree and was named to the IWLCA Division II Academic Honor Roll as well. Burud earned her master's degree in 2021.

Warren Shumate

Warren Shumate was hired as Barton’s first head coach in men’s lacrosse in June of 2017.


In just five short seasons at the helm, Shumate has helped put the Bulldogs on the map after reaching several milestones including national rankings of No. 18 (Inside Lacrosse) and No. 20 (USA Lacrosse Magazine) this past spring.


In addition, Shumate led the Bulldogs to their first-ever Conference Carolinas Championship in 2023 as Barton finished with its third consecutive winning season at 11-7. Shumate was also named the league's coach of the year in 2021. Under Shumate's guidance, the Bulldogs have totaled 16 all-conference selections and one honorable mention All-American.


Shumate joined the Barton staff after serving for eight seasons as head coach at his alma mater, Gordon College, an NCAA Division III program in Wenham, Mass.


In his first season leading the Fighting Scots, Shumate promptly earned Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors after Gordon went 8-2 in conference play and finished third in the league.


Before returning to Gordon in 2009, Shumate spent four years teaching and coaching at The Wakefield School in The Plains, Va., with three of those years as head coach of the varsity boy’s lacrosse team. Shumate was a four-time all-conference player at Gordon and earned all-region honors twice. In 2003, Gordon helped the Fighting Scots to their first NCAA tournament appearance and was named Gordon’s Senior Athlete of the Year in 2005.


Shumate has been heavily involved in developing young players throughout his head coaching career, both through FCA Lacrosse and his own program, Origin Lacrosse. Shumate and his wife, Lindsay, have a daughter, Finley, along with twins, Teagan and Paxton, and reside in Wilson, N.C.
