Rocky Batty

Rocky Batty is in his sixth season as the head men's lacrosse coach at Babson College in 2023-24. He was hired as the 14th head coach in program history in July of 2018.

The Beavers are coming off an outstanding 2023 season under Batty, when they captured the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season and tournament championships and made an appearance in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Green and White were recognized as Batty and his assistants were voted NEWMAC Coaching Staff of the Year while the team also earned nine All-Conference selections, including Player and Defensive Players of the Year. Babson also had one second team All-American, two honorable mention All-Americans and four All-Region selections.

Batty led the Beavers to historic 2021 campaign that included a share of the NEWMAC regular season title before capturing the first conference tournament championship in program history. The victory over Coast Guard allowed the Green and White to punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1979. Babson entered the Nike/US Lacrosse Division III poll at No. 20 going into the NCAA Tournament and Batty's players earned five all-conference and a program-record five NEILA all-region awards following the season.

After going 8-9 overall in 2019, Batty guided the Beavers to early-season victories over Bates and Endicott in 2020 before the campaign was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Beavers finished 8-9 again in 2022, earning home-field advantage in the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament, and had four Beavers earn All-Conference honors and two receive All-Region accolades.

Well respected and with over 25 years of head coaching experience, Batty came to Babson after serving as an assistant coach at Division I Boston University in 2018. He was involved in all facets of the program for the Terriers, who reached the Patriot League Tournament semifinals following an upset of nationally-ranked Bucknell University.

Prior to his stint at Boston University, Batty spent 10 seasons as the boys' varsity lacrosse coach at Wellesley High School. He posted an overall record of 148-63 while leading the Raiders to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association (MIAA) State Tournament 10 straight times between 2008-17.

Batty guided Wellesley to an undefeated regular season in 2011 and the Eastern Massachusetts Division II championship game in 2012. During his tenure, over 40 players went on to play lacrosse in the collegiate ranks.

A 1991 graduate of Brown University, Batty played defense for the Bears before beginning his coaching career at Brookline High School in 1992, where he served as the boys' varsity head coach from 1999-2006.

Devin Newell

Devin Newell is in his third season as an assistant coach for the Babson College men's lacrosse program in 2023-24.

After helping the team to an 8-9 record in his first season, the Beavers enjoyed an outstanding 2023 season, when they captured the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season and tournament championships and made an appearance in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Green and White were recognized as head coach Rocky Batty, Newell and the staff were voted NEWMAC Coaching Staff of the Year while the team also earned nine All-Conference selections, including Player and Defensive Players of the Year. Babson also had one second team All-American, two honorable mention All-Americans and four All-Region selections.

Newell came to Babson after spending the 2021 campaign as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Curry College. He served as the offensive coordinator for the Colonels, which ranked second in man-up scoring percentage and fourth in goals per game in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) last season.

Newell, who coached three all-conference and two all-region selections, also served as Curry's recruiting coordinator and helped the program bring in 20 student-athletes in 2021.

One of the most decorated players in Curry history, Newell graduated in 2019 as the program's all-time scoring leader with 211 points. He ranked second all-time in goals (125) and first in assists (86) over 69 career games. Additionally, Newell produced three seasons of 30 or more goals and totaled at least 59 points in each of his final three seasons with the Colonels.

A three-time All-CCC selection, Newell helped the Curry match its single-season record for victories in both 2016 and 2018, while leading the 2017 and 2019 squads to the CCC Tournament semifinals. Curry's 2017 conference quarterfinal win over Roger Williams was the first in school history.

Along with his collegiate coaching experience, Newell has coached for the Piatelli Lacrosse Club and served as a coach and recruiter for PrimeTime Lacrosse.
